Clint Lewis, Jr., Executive Vice President and Group President, International Operations, Commercial Development, Global Genetics, Aquatic Health and Human Medical Diagnostics
Clint Lewis is executive vice president and group president responsible for International Operations, Commercial Development and Lifecycle Innovation, Global Genetics, Aquatic Health and Human Medical Diagnostics at Zoetis. In this role, he is responsible for all markets outside the United States. Mr Lewis also oversees the company’s global commercial development and new product strategy, as well as the Global Genetics business and PHARMAQ, the company’s aquaculture business.
Mr Lewis previously served as president, International Operations at Zoetis (2015-2018) and president, U.S. Operations at Zoetis (2013-2015). Prior to the formation of Zoetis, he served as president, U.S. Operations, for Pfizer Animal Health, which he joined in 2007. Mr Lewis joined Pfizer in 1988 as a sales representative in the human health pharmaceutical segment and held positions of increasing responsibility across various commercial and general management roles dedicated to human health.
In addition to his responsibilities at Zoetis, Mr Lewis served as the former vice chair and chairman for the Animal Health Institute (AHI), the trade association for the animal health industry in the U.S. (2009-2012). He also served as the treasurer for Animal Health Europe, the trade association for the animal health industry in Europe (2016-2018).
Mr Lewis serves as a member of the Board of Directors for International Paper, where he is a member of the Governance and Public Policy, Environment and Sustainability subcommittees. He has been recognized by Black Enterprise Magazine as one of its 300 Most Powerful Executives, and by Savoy magazine as one of it’s Top 100 most influential African-Americans in Corporate America.
Paul Dick, Founder & President, Paul Dick & Associates
Paul Dick, DVM, MSc has over 30 years of experience in the animal health industry with responsibilities ranging from product development, regulatory affairs, business development, product commercialization and general management. Roles in this sector have involved both large and medium multi-nationals, and, small start-up companies in various capacities including COO and CEO level positions. Dr. Dick worked for Elanco Animal Health for 20 years in a variety of management roles including Manager of R & D, Manager of Regulatory Affairs, and, Manager of Quality Control and Corporate Affairs. He eventually became the Chief Operating Officer of Naturagen: a global Elanco Apollo team that was charged with the acquisition, development and commercialization of natural health products for food animals. He successfully led this virtual team and managed a large number of projects simultaneously.
Dr Dick has worked extensively with Health Canada’s Veterinary Drugs Directorate (VDD) and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) on numerous regulatory submissions and on departmental committees, including Health Canada’s Animal Antimicrobial Resistance Advisory Committee from 1999 to 2002. He has served a number of organizations including as Director of the Canadian Animal Health Institute, President of the Ontario Veterinary Medical Association, and peer reviewer of NSERC strategic grants. Paul has authored / co-authored numerous peer-reviewed publications, literature reviews and scientific reports for regulatory agencies, veterinary organizations, and, small and large animal health companies.
He also served on the Expert Advisory Committee for Veterinary Natural Health Products, which provided the Health Products and Food Branch of Health Canada with recommendations regarding policies related to the development of a suitable regulatory approach for veterinary natural health products. He was instrumental in the establishment of the Veterinary Drugs Directorate’s Low Risk Veterinary Health Products Interim Notification Program (now the Veterinary Health Products Notification Program).
Deb Dullen, President & CEO, BioTraceIT™
Deborah is the co-founder of the BioTraceIT™ team, formed in 2014. She brings over twenty years of experience in both the biotech and medical device fields with expertise in business development, sales, R&D, and global market entry. Deborah has a broad background from devices with J&J DePuy-Synthes to pharmaceutical, proteomics and genomics with Applied Biosystems and Eli Lilly. Working with thousands of sales individuals she has participated and led multiple product launches and developed market strategies resulting in blockbuster products and a broad global business network. Deb has founded other successful start-ups, including Imtakt Corporation, a top research consumable company in Asia-Pacific. Klaus Hellmann, CEO, klifovet
Dr Klaus Hellmann is a veterinarian with more than 25 years’ experience in the animal health industry. Prior to founding Klifovet in 1997 as a CRO, he worked in veterinary practice, science and the animal health industry. He is a Board-certified veterinary pharmacologist, Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology and holds the title of an Auditor (European Organisation of Quality). As CEO of Klifovet, he acts as a consultant on international VMP product development.
Daniel Hurnik, Professor of Swine Health Management at the Atlantic Veterinary College, University of Prince Edward Island
Dr Hurnik holds a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the University of Guelph, and a Master of Science degree in epidemiology from UPEI. Dr Hurnik has served AVC as an industry research chair, interim dean, and chair of two departments. He is a founder of the Atlantic Swine Research Partnership Inc.
His research has supported the establishment of two P.E.I. biotech companies, Progressive Bioactives Inc., and Chemaphor Inc. (now Avivagen). He is a veterinary consultant to International Genetics PEI Ltd. and International Genetics Ltd., which together market Canadian swine genetics and expertise worldwide.
Dr Hurnik has been a director on the Canadian Swine Health Board and the Canadian Centre for Swine lmprovement, which manages Canada’s national swine genetics program. He has advised the industry on the development of a national swine farm-level biosecurity standard and a quality assurance program, in conjunction with the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association and the Canadian Pork Council.
He has been a technical advisor to the federal porcine circovirus associated diseases task team and the national swine traceability program. He has been a consultant to the World Bank on the management of African swine fever in Eastern Europe and co-authored a biosecurity guide for pig production for the World Bank, FAO, and the World Health Organisation for Animal Health.
Jean Szkotnicki President, Canadian Animal Health Institute
For more than 25 years, Jean Szkotnicki has led the Canadian Animal Health Institute (CAHI) skillfully balancing the responsibility of advocating for Canadian veterinary pharmaceutical companies with livestock producers.
CAHI a trade association representing companies that develop and manufacture pharmaceuticals, biologicals, feed additives and pesticides used to support the health and well-being of our companion and food animals.
In her capacity as President, Jean works with CAHI members to develop Institute policy and strategic directions. Liaison and communication activities with regulatory authorities, producer groups, veterinary associations, research institutions and the media are also important in her role.
A champion for antimicrobial stewardship, Jean has been instrumental in ensuring antimicrobials are used properly as part of a “one health” approach to human and animal antibiotic use in Canada. She’s passionate about building public trust in food and sits on numerous industry boards including the Canadian Centre for Food Integrity and as chair of the animal health product regulatory advisory committee to Health Canada and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.
Jean has both BSc (Agr) and MSc degrees from the University of Guelph, Guelph, Ontario. She was inducted into the Canadian Agricultural Hall of Fame in 2017.
Charles Hoare Managing Director Head of European Healthcare M&A, Stifel
Charles Hoare has almost 20 years of experience in healthcare investment banking. Prior to joining Stifel, he was Managing Director and Head of Global Healthcare at Commerzbank.
He spent most of his career at Merrill Lynch, where he was the Managing Director responsible for the Northern European healthcare business and the animal health franchise. He serves as Chairman of the Bulldog Trust, Chairman of Chariot Innovations Limited (the commercialisation arm of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine), and is a Non-executive Director of Placehill Limited, and Laguna Ventures Limited.
Rory Francis, Executive Director, Prince Edward Island BioAlliance
Since 2004 Rory has been Executive Director of the Prince Edward Island BioAlliance, a not-for-profit network of bioscience businesses, academic and research organizations, and government agencies that includes over 55 companies earning over $200 million in annual sales. He is a founder of the Emergence Bioscience Business Incubator, and Natural Products Canada, a new CECR based in PEI.
From 1991 to 2003 Mr Francis held Deputy Minister positions in several provincial government departments, including Environment; Agriculture and Forestry; Fisheries and Aquaculture; and Health and Social Services. Francis is a member of the Canadian BioAccord and serves as a board member with the Canadian Agri-Food Policy Institute, the Atlantic Chamber of Commerce, the Food Island Partnership, the Vineland Research and Innovation Centre, is president of the Eastern Canada Oilseeds Development Alliance, and is currently serves as president of the Greater Charlottetown and Area Chamber of Commerce.
He chairs the advisory board for the Culinary Institute of Canada’s Technology Access Centre at Holland College. In 2017, Mr Francis was appointed co-chair of the Atlantic Canada Bioscience Sector Export Development Working Group and is a member of the Oceans Supercluster team, representing marine biotechnology and fish health and nutrition capabilities in the region, recently announced as one of Canada’s new Supercluster initiatives.
Joan Turner Adams, Business Development Officer and Bioscience Sector Specialist, Innovation PEI
Joan is a business development sector specialist in the Bioscience for Innovation PEI. She has worked in this area for more than ten years and has assisted with the growth and development of PEI’s Bioscience cluster from its earliest days.
Her background is in marketing and she has a Master’s degree in Business Administration with a specialization in Biotechnology Business Management. Prior to entering government, Joan worked in the private sector with a global manufacturing firm, providing industry-specific market intelligence and data to the sales team. Additionally, she was responsible for the bidding and estimating of large manufacturing projects specific to the oil and gas industry with values up to $20 million dollars. Joan’s strong connection with local businesses and working with new companies as they set-up operations locally has provided her a unique understanding of the necessary environment to grow a company from its earliest stages to full commercialization.
Jeff Burry, Trade and Investment Officer, International Business Development, Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA)
Jeff is an economic development practitioner with over 25 years of public sector experience and leadership at the federal, provincial and municipal government levels across Atlantic Canada. In his current capacities with the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (Government of Canada), Jeff is engaged in the development and delivery of programs and services advancing the Region’s interests in international trade, innovation and immigration.
A deeply rooted Newfoundlander, Jeff is a passionate community volunteer, holds a Master’s degree in Political Science from the University of Waterloo and is a proud alumnus of Memorial University.
